back to the future/ BBFC - U certificate / inspirational child's film

           Back to the future

The opening of this film is the sound of the clocks ticking as basic credits are flashed against black. This then fades into one continuous tracked shot which traces over and focuses on important items and features of the film which all contain clues of what will happen in the movie. For example the clocks all suggest the film may have something to do with time travel, or the devices that make toast or coffee. There are also several items that give us some back story such as the newspaper article on a mansion being destroyed or the tv news reporter and the radio broadcasts. This sequence is shot in one continuous movement that explores the room in one long cut less shot, it only cuts once to show the overloaded dogs bowl which tells us that no one has been in the building for a while. There is also the shot of the skateboard which rolls to the box with the radioactive symbol on it, this links with the news report near the beginning of this clip. From this opening minute of this film we already have several clues to where the narrative will take us.

               BBFC – U certificate
- should be suitable for audiences 4 and over.
-should have a positive message and morals which a child can perhaps learn something from.
-anything like horror, violence or drugs should be counter balanced so children will not think it is acceptable to repeat such things.(eg showing that bad things happen to someone who drinks alcohol or the villain of the film getting into trouble for doing something bad)
-no forms of discrimination at all.
-any scary sequences should be brief or should have a positive outcome (counter balanced) they should also be unrealistic.
-no realistic weapons. (e.g guns, knives etc)
-nothing dangerous that children can easily copy.(glamorisation of drugs alcohol or reckless behaviour)
-no bad language .(or very mild bad language)
-mild references to sexual actions. (kissing is allowed to be shown)
-themes should be sensitive to young children.
-mild violence (mild slapstick or humorous violence)

            inspirational children’s movie

the spongebob squarepants movie is a perfect example of a children’s film because it features many things that a childs film should have. It has many bright colours and looks very upbeat. It is very humorous and silly. The characters featured in the film all have humorous appearances and voices, which also make it appeal to children. It is easily capable of holding a child’s attention as it is animated in a way that looks fun and exaggerated. The film shots are very fast paced which makes it seem more action packed to the audience.
This film inspired me because it is constantly at the same pace all the way through. The opening gives us clues about the rest of the film and it is immediately in the narrative with very little messing around with unimportant facts. We are told about the restraint and the manager position very quickly. We are instantly aware of what is happening in the film. The story is also told in a funny way through out which makes this film so appropriate through out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MloqrtU0sE&feature=related  (sound is poor on this link)

homework - dec

Watching the first few minutes of toy story it gives us a lot of clues on many different aspects of the film including the genre the types of charactes, theme and even the mood of the film, however in order to find out these different things we have to look at different parts such as the sound camera work and voices and music.

Theme- when looking at what the theme is we have lots of different things coming into the shot to tell us and help us make up our mind about the type of film it is, the first thing we hear Is a song and it is a very jolly film as the song is “you’ve got a friend in me” we can also tell that there is going to me some comedy in the film as we get many clues about this, the first clue we get is when there is a picture of mr, potatoe head saying wanted for a billizion dollars then further when they say empty the safe and they shake the pig up and down, the film is also an animation and an adventure, we can tell even though the first scene is supposed to be a hostage scene it is kind of put to a side and made comedy and good fun when all the characters are smiling and are nice bright colours so for this reason this is what makes it a children’s film the camera work is a extreme close up but is tracking from one shot to the next so everything links there are also many effects such as the animation and the realistic of it which makes the film such a good one

phils analysis of film opening

                                    Wayne’s world – PG

Intro-
Diegetic sound of voice advertising an arcade as the image of a man talking on TV fade from titles, this already gives the feel of the movie a relaxed atmosphere. -cut to- A man and a woman are in bed watching the television. Their facial expressions look displease and comedic as they flick through channels when they come across ‘wayne’s world’ and stop flicking. –cut to- wayne’s basement where the show is being filmed. It is brightly lit and the characters look happy and are doing the intro to their show which we can see as the camera tracks along behind some film equipment and shows us how the show will look as it goes out. We already get clues about the film being about wayne’s TV show who is already very obviously the main character as most of the talking is done by him.  The scene of the basement is mostly made up of bright colours which is another indication of a comedy. When we see through the camera on the screen we can see that the show is unprofessional and shambolic which adds humour to the scenes. The shots are relatively long; the opening is very slow paced suggesting that the film is not at all serious. There is also a lot of comic noise and dialogue as Garth, another main character who is also representing in a comical way (big glasses with long bushy hair and scruffy clothing) is getting his hair cut by one of the shows guests’ hair cutting invention which is also something that would not feature in a serious film.-cut to- Something goes wrong with the machinery and one of the crew members hits the equipment with a wrench until it stops sparking. This is an unnecessary seen to the plot yet it adds humour to the scene, this is more evidence that the movies sole purpose is to entertain. –cut to- People in bed discussing the show. Conversation is very light hearted, the people look very normal and care free and tone is very frivolous. The camera does not cut much a tall and is still shooting in a very laid back way. –cut to- Wayne is talking to the camera touring his house and explaining his situation and telling us about himself. The camera is tracked and is going away from wayne as he walks towards it. The fact that the character is talking to camera is very light hearted and friendly. His dialogue gives us a rough idea of what will happen in the rest of the film. There are not particularly any special effects in the intro which suggests that it will not be a very high octane film. There are not many cuts while he talks to the camera.

First Group Video§

this is our first video

Albert , Phil & Henry

Evaluation:

What were we asked to do?

We were asked to make a storyboard for a short film and then after making the storyboard, we were sent to go out and look / find a suitable location to film our short film, keeping in mind that the scenario / environment fitted in with the story.

Any problems encountered?

The problems we encountered were that , we accidentally passed the 180 degree line in the final over the shoulder shot of phil.

What techniques did you demonstrate?

The techniques that we demonstrated were:

shot reverse shot
over the shoulder shot
high angle long shot
medium close up
medium longshot
extreme close up

How do you think it will help you in your coursework?

We think it will help us in our coursework, because it gives us experience and practice using the camera as well as helping us learn from the mistakes that henry makes.
